Wood-Based Biomass Power Plant

Marubeni Corporation and Taisei Corporation have started developing a wood-based biomass power plant at the Ishikari Bay New Port Area in Ishikari City, Hokkaido, Japan.

The biomass power plant will have a power generation output of 9,950 kW and will consume locally produced fuel consisting mainly of unused thinned wood from the central area of Hokkaido.

Once operational, the plant will produce approximately 8,000 million kWh, enough to power about 25,000 households.

This biomass plant is Marubeni’s second plant to involve local consumption of locally produced fuel after the Godo Biomass Power Plant.

Oil products, coal and natural gas dominated the Japanese energy system. Renewables

made up a modest share of 6% of the total energy supply, with around one-third of renewable energy being from biomass.
