IDB has approved technical cooperation to identify decarbonization roadmaps for heavy industry in Brazil, Mexico and Trinidad and Tobago. The funds will support the proposal of technologies and demonstrative projects, the drafting of policy and regulatory guidelines, and capacity building. Accounting for 85% of all the region’s industrial emissions, the five countries with the largest emissions from these sectors are Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, Colombia and Chile, while Trinidad and Tobago hold the largest industrial emissions per capita in the region,” the development bank highlighted.
The regional lender added that heavy industrial activity is difficult to decarbonize and requires a comprehensive plan combining electrification, efficient technologies, cleaner fuels, and carbon capture technologies. IDB plans to engage consultants, according to procurement information. As part of its low-carbon energy technologies program, the bank also greenlighted technical cooperation to support the establishment of a regional green hydrogen facility and zero carbon paths for the Caribbean.
