Brazil has given the go-ahead to 353.46 MW of wind farms to commence operations in March 2021, power sector regulator Aneel announced. The country has added 383.66 MW of new capacity last month, with wind parks accounting for 92% of that. Since the beginning of the year, Aneel has approved 682.61 MW of new plants to start operations.
The power sector watchdog, wind parks accounted for 87% of the new capacity added in the first quarter of the year, five times more when compared to the same period of 2020. At present, wind power represents 10% of the country’s total installed capacity, while solar represents 1.87%. Large hydro (UHE), small hydro (PCHs) and mini hydro (CGH) account for 58.34%, 3.12% and 0.47% of the total installed capacity, respectively. As a result of the new additions, Brazil closes the first three months of 2021 with 174,883.1 MW of authorized power, of which 74.92% comes from sustainable and low-emission sources.
