EDP to Sell Renewable Energy to Paranaguá Container Terminal

EDP, a company that operates in all segments of the Brazilian electricity sector, signed a contract for the sale of renewable energy to the Paranaguá Container Terminal (TCP), the largest in South America. The contract provides for the supply of energy with the I-REC (Renewable Energy Certificates) seal, which guarantees its renewable origin. With the transaction, TCP – whose average daily energy consumption is equivalent to that of a city of 156 thousand inhabitants, avoids the emission of around 10 thousand tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) in a period of 1 year. The commercial and institutional director of the terminal, Thomas Lima, highlights the importance of the new contract for the company’s strategic objectives: “At TCP, we are committed to ESG practices, working in a sustainable way and focusing on protecting the environment. As the main refrigerated container corridor in Brazil, our energy needs are high and, from now on, all this energy will come from renewable sources, reinforcing this commitment”. In 2020, 42% of all frozen chicken and poultry exports from Brazil passed through the terminal in Paranaguá.

The I-REC has been used in Brazil since 2017 and has allowed electricity consumers to choose to use renewable energy based on evidence and traceability. EDP has been allowed, since 2021, to issue and sell I-RECS referring to the energy generated by one of its plants. EDP’s mission is to lead the energy transition throughout this decade, and the contract model signed with TCP reflects our commitment to this purpose, by offering a solution that combines energy savings with the decarbonization of the operation of our customers.
