80% of Power in Colombia from Renewables

Renewables and large hydropower plants (HPPs) in Colombia were behind 80.01% of the nation’s electricity production. Operator of the Colombian national interconnected system (SIN), shows that the power production from clean energy plants dropped by 2.95% month-on-month to an average of 158.38 GWh per day.

Drop came as the combined production from HPPs, both large and run-of-the-river type, decreased by 3.83% month-on-month to a daily average of 155.16 GWh. Electricity production from fossil fuels went up by 0.96% to 39.58 GWh on average per day. Demand for electricity in the SIN network declined by 1.59% year-on-year in December. For the total of 2020, demand dropped by 2.60% year-on-year. In 2019, demand rose by 4.02% year-on-year.
