36.8 MW of Wind Energy in Peru

Grenergy in a renewable energy auction in 2016 and are part of Peru’s plan to meet 60% of its energy demand with clean energy by 2025, and its efforts to bring electricity to remote areas. The facilities will supply an estimated 165,000 MWh a year to the National Interconnected Electric System for the next 20 years. Two wind farms were built more than 2,400 metres (7,874 ft) above sea level in Chota, Cajamarca province. They are the first to be installed and operated in the windy Peruvian Sierra.

Start of operation was also reported by Peru’s Ministry of Energy and Mines, which said that the country added 58 MW of renewable energy capacity in 2020, besides the two 18.4-MW wind farms, including also a 20-MW hydropower plant and a 2.4-MW biomass power plant. Siemens Gamesa and CJR were contracted for the construction and operation of the Duna and Huambos wind farms. Financing was provided by Madrid-based Instituto Oficial de Credito (ICO), Latin American development bank Banco de Desarrollo de America Latina (CAF) and Sinia Renovables SCR SA, a unit of Spanish lender Banco de Sabadell SA. Grenergy said that the COVID-19 crisis has presented a challenge to the wind farms’ implementation but they were still connected on schedule.
