Royal Dutch Shell and Microsoft Alliance in Energy Transition

Strategic cooperation builds up on 30 years of joint work. It supports Shell’s ambition to be a net-zero emissions energy business by 2050 and Microsoft’s commitment to use 100% renewable power by 2025. The alliance is similar to the one announced last week by Microsoft and BP. Under the deal, Shell will provide Microsoft with renewable power energy, and use Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing system to strengthen its operational safety.

The companies will explore advancing the use of sustainable aviation fuels and developing new digital tools so Shell can offer its suppliers and customers support in reducing their carbon footprints. Microsoft and Shell both have rich histories of innovation and bold ambitions to decarbonize. Cross-industry collaborations like this are fundamental to help society reach net-zero emissions by 2050, and digital transformation is key to tackling this important issue, within the energy sector and beyond.
